there were very few good parts in this movie. The rest were either Boring,Cruel or depressing.
A man(Jim Broadbent) Escorts a young lady to meet a lord(Hugh Laurie) at his palace. Upon arriving he finds that he lacks proper etiquette skills and goes to a etiquette school.

3/10 This was a strange movie. A lonely (Victorian? Edwardian?) man seeks a wife. He makes up a pedigree and acquaintances to lure in a young woman. Her creepy mother sends her to visit him - alone without chaperone! and he introduces her to the single hoipolloi he can think of. He's dreary and nobody seems to love him for who he is and he doesn't value himself. She is seductive and manipulative. The Lord is manipulative and awkward.
ReplyDeleteAs a mockery of social classes and those who seek to move upward it succeeds but not by being pleasant to either side.
Depressing.
The trick of having the story narrated and supposedly written by a very young child works a few times (the luxuries and foods imagined, the ideas of what flirting entailed) but falls totally flat at others. The storyline and details fo the seduction would be totally inappropriate for a child.
